Curriculum

The curriculum is not just the goals of the program and the planned activities but also the daily schedule, the availability and use of materials, transitions between activities, and the way in which routine tasks of living are implemented. Criteria for curriculum implementation reflect the knowledge that young children learn through active manipulation of the environment and concrete experiences which contribute to concept development.

At First Friends we utilize the Creative Curriculum approach set forth by Teaching Strategies.  This curriculum model is based on research that children learn best through hands-on exploration with people and materials.  Children learn through Play! Children need to use all their senses to truly learn about their world.  The Creative Curriculum sets the foundation by providing information about

  • Developmental milestones
  • Setting up environment
  • Choosing appropriate activities
  • Assessing children’s development
  • Sharing information with parents

The teachers observe each individual child, documenting developmental goals they have reached as well as those they have yet to reach.  This shows the teachers what developmental objectives to work on. The teachers also observe what the children are interested in. These observations help the teachers decide on topics to study.

We take care to ensure the curriculum each week is developmentally appropriate for and of interest to our current group of children.
